The Story

Liverpool’s road to Istanbul was never straightforward.

Rafael Benítez’s side had already survived a defining Anfield night against Olympiacos, when Steven Gerrard’s late strike dragged them into the knockout stages. Juventus were edged out. Chelsea were beaten in a semi-final remembered for noise, tension and Luis García’s goal.

Then came AC Milan.

At half-time in the 2005 UEFA Champions League Final, Liverpool were 3–0 down against a side filled with legends: Maldini, Pirlo, Kaká, Shevchenko and Crespo. For many watching, the match looked over.

But six second-half minutes changed everything.

Gerrard rose to head Liverpool back into life. Vladimir Smicer struck from distance. Xabi Alonso followed up his saved penalty to make it 3–3. By the time Jerzy Dudek denied Shevchenko in extra time and then again in the shootout, Istanbul had become one of football’s great shared memories.
